1776-2008

232 Years of Independence!

Message from Town Supervisor Daniel Sturm:

At 8:30 a.m. on June 11th the Town Supervisor declared a State of Emergency due to the wind storm damage on June 10th.  We are happy to report that there were no serious injuries in our Town.  Although, there was serious damage to homes in Smallwood, Mongaup Valley, Kauneonga Lake, White Lake and Swan Lake, which were the hardest hit areas in the County.  The Bethel Highway Department worked diligently to clear the roads of debris for the NYSEG crews to repair the electric lines and for residents to come and go from their homes.  NYSEG made dry ice and water available to all County residents affected by the storm at the White Lake Firehouse, which was also the NYSEG staging area.  The Smallwood Water Co. made water available at the Smallwood Firehouse and Kauneonga Lake Firehouse was a cooling station for those in need of relief from the heat.  The Town Board would like to thank all the residents for their cooperation during the emergency.  We all worked together through this disaster.  The Town Board would like to also thank the Bethel Highway Department, Smallwood Fire Co., White Lake Fire Co., Kauneonga Lake Fire Co., NYSEG, Verizon, Sullivan County Emergency Management, Sullivan County Department of Public Works, the Town Constables, the Bethel Building Department, the Bethel Town Clerk’s Office, the Highway Department Clerk, the Town Bookkeeper and the Assessor’s Office who all worked together.

Emergency Information
It was very interesting speaking with so many residents during this storm emergency.  Being from a Hurricane State (Florida!),  I was taught at an early age to be prepared for storms; we evacuated our home many times and were left without power often.  Items to have on hand are:

a land-line telephone that does not require electricity (can be purchased at most five and ten’s), fresh batteries, a battery-operated radio, canned goods, candles, matches, bottled water (for flushing toilet, washing hands, taking medicine), have your car tank at least at ½ tank.  These are only several items that come to mind.  NYSEG mails out each year a brochure on what to have on hand during in case of an emergency or more information can be found at www.nyseg.com for more storm tips.

In the past 11 years our Town has been fortunate that we have not had to deal with any major catastrophes.  In most cases, during an emergency event the Town Supervisor, Town Clerk and Building Department will be available at the Town Hall (or designated staging area) (even on weekends and after hours).
