Traffic Alert Saturday, August 30th

The Journey Concert at Bethel Woods scheduled for Saturday, August 30th is SOLD OUT.  This is Labor Day Weekend and traffic will be heavy during the peak hours of concertgoers arriving (4 p.m. – 7 p.m.) and leaving (10 p.m. – Midnight), primarily on Route 17B  Please be patient, drive carefully and take extra time to get to your destination.  Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Fuel Oil Cooperative Purchase

The Town of Bethel is researching the possibility of Bethel residents purchasing fuel oil as a cooperative.  The residents would receive the fuel oil from one supplier at a reduced rate.  More information to follow.  Conservation Brochures on how to conserve energy, heating energy assistance program (HEAP) and CACHE Weatherization Program will be available at the Town Hall later in the year. 

 

2nd ANNUAL ISMS GOLF TOURNAMENT

Saturday - September 6th - 9am Tee off. Tarry Brae Golf Course in South Fallsburg, New York.

Pre-school Vision Screening

Vision Screening by the Bethel Lions will be held on Friday, August 29th  at the Bethel Senior Center in Kauneonga Lake from 2 – 5 pm for children ages 1 – 5 years.  Each child must have a signed permission slip which will be available on the day of testing or at the Bethel Town Hall.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.  This is the last day of the Farmers Market.

 

Sullivan County Alzheimer’s Assoc. Memory Walk

Faith Ministries Basketball

If you are aged 8-16 and looking for something exciting to do on Friday nights, our Basketball League is just for you. Faith Ministries is sponsoring a 5-week basketball league to give young people the opportunity to play on a team in a league setting on Friday nights from September 19th through October 24th.   Games will begin at 7 PM at Faith Hall Gym, Rt. 17 B in White Lake across from Bethel Medical Center. 10th Annual Harvest Festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts

Held every Sunday from late August to Columbus Day to celebrate the bounty, beauty and talent of Sullivan County and surrounding areas.  The festival features a farmers market, craft village, corn maze, pony rides, Children’s area, pumpkins, special events, live music and more. Each week offers a new theme or special event sure to please the entire family.   Open from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free admission, no pets. For more information call 295-2448.

Fall Litter Pluck Announced

The Sullivan County Legislature has announced a Fall Litterpluck.  THIS IS NOT BULK WASTE CLEAN-UP DAY!  Only the County issued clear bags will be accepted at any of the County dumping facilities.  The 2008 Fall Litterpluck through the Legislature’s Sullivan Beautification program will take place county-wide on Saturday, September 13, 2008.  As always, the Sullivan County Division of Public Works & Solid Waste will donate trash bags for this community-based roadside cleanup event, & will accept the roadside refuse for disposal free-of-charge at the County Landfill and Transfer Stations (not the Town Transfer Station).  Residents or groups need to sign-in at the Town Hall, to collect the new CLEAR Litterpluck bags and new mandatory Litterpluck coupons.  Instruction sheets will also be available.  Pre-Registration required.  The Sullivan County Transfer Stations and Landfill will accept the clear Litterpluck bags with the official Litterpluck coupons from Saturday, September 6, 2008 through Sunday, September 20, 2008, giving residents two full weekends to participate.

 

Recycled Printer Cartridges

The Town Clerk’s Office will accept used printer and copier cartridges for recycling.  Sullivan County Environmental (SPECS) will receive cash for each cartridge recycled. 

 

Bethel-Smallwood Senior Club

 

Bethel-Smallwood Senior Club will meet on September 3rd at 1pm at the Senior Center.  Play day is Sept 9th and 25th at 11:30.  Contact Manny @ 583-7971

 

SC Conservation Club

The Sullivan County Conservation Club will be holding the yearly Boone Shot at the club on September 14th.  They will be raffling off a Rifle, Fishing rod and reel and a knife.  Everyone is invited to join in the competition.  Contact Manny @ 583-7971

 

Senior Committee Raffle

The Bethel Senior Building Committee would like to thank everyone who took part in the 50/50 at the Kauneonga Farmers Market.  The winner was Irene O’Leary who donated her winning back to the Committee.  She won $400.00!

 

Good-bye to Summer Pool Party - Saturday, September 6th

From 11 AM to 5 PM (weather permitting) at the Town of Bethel Park and Pool on Old White Lake Turnpike off Route 55.  Come enjoy the day at our picturesque park.  Spend some time in the pool or on the new playground.  Play a game of basketball.  Hot dogs, chips and sodas will be available for free until they are all gone.  This is a free event for our residents (no fees for swimming).  Come see what everyone is raving about – a hidden gem of a park in your backyard.

 

Bethel Harvest Festival Corn & Hay Maze – Sunday, September 7th

From 11 AM to 3 PM the BLDC, with volunteers from the Bethel Youth Board, and the Smallwood-Mongaup Valley Ladies Auxiliary will be operating the mazes.  Stop by to support our local organizations and farmers.

 

Ringling Bros. & Barnum Bailey Circus – Boom-a-Ring Show Bus Trip

The Bethel Youth Board is sponsoring a trip to the circus at the Broome County Arena in Binghamton on Saturday, October 11th.  Showtime is 11 AM with pre-show activities beginning at 10 AM.  The bus will leave White Lake at 8:00 AM.  Cost for Bethel Youth will be $15.00.  Cost for Adults and non-residents if $30.00.  A registration will be held on Friday, September 12th from 5:00 to 6:00 PM at the Bethel Town HallPayment is due at registration.  Limited to 45 people.  No registrations will be accepted after September 20th.  Not recommended for children under 4. The trip will be canceled if a sufficient number of participants is not met.  The cost includes admission to the circus and coach bus transportation.

 

Upcoming Activities in October

Friday, October 3rd from 5 to 6 PM will be a registration for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular Trip on Saturday, November 15th.  Cost of the trip will be $42 for Bethel Youth and $62 for Adults and non-residents.  No registrations will be accepted after October 17th.  Limited to 45 people.

Gypsy Moth Information

 

Due to the invasion of gypsy moths I thought it would be helpful to share information on the management of these common and natural invaders.  I called Cornell Cooperative Extension in Liberty and they sent me some useful informational on the entire cycle of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar).  One contact they sent me was the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service at www.na.fs.fed.us  Another website is www.entomology.cornell.edu

 

School Tax Bills

School Tax Bills are mailed out from the School Districts on September 1st.  The Town of Bethel has three School Districts; Monticello Central, Liberty Central and Sullivan West Central.  Each District is responsible for collecting their own taxes, School taxes are not collected by the Town.  You can contact the School Tax Collector by calling Monticello (794-1515), Liberty (439-3557) and Sullivan West (482-4610 ext. 4115).  School tax bills are available online at www.taxlookup.net click on Sullivan County then your School District

 

September Primary Elections

There will not be any September Election Primaries in the Town of Bethel


Absentee Election Ballot Applications & Voter Registration

Absentee Election ballot applications are available at the Bethel Town Hall and the County Election Board for the November General Election.   Election Day is November 4, 2008.  Voter registration forms are also available at both locations.
